Treatment For Receding Gums

Revolutionary new treatment for receding gums

A new minimally invasive technique, call Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST) has been invented and licensed by Dr. John Chao. This method for restoring missing gum coverage from the roots of teeth utilizes specialized instruments through a small perforation in the gum tissue. There are no scalpel incisions or stitches needed to achieve results.

Exposed tooth roots due to loss of gum tissue is one of the most common dental gum problems, that may often cause tooth sensitivity and be unsightly to look at. This problem can be the result of any one or combination of factors, such as gingivitis, orthodontic expansion of the dental arch, over-exuberant tooth brushing, smoking, clenching and grinding of the teeth and/or aging. It is said that the older one lives, the higher the chance of this problem occurring in virtually one half of the population on some of their teeth.

Until the invention of the PST, the treatment of choice was to remove a section of gum from one’s palate (donor site), and transferring it to the area of gum loss (recipient site), and then stitching the gum in place. This requires two wound sites, coupled with the use of a scalpel and sutures. PST allows for multiple gum recession area to be treated in often just one visit with no scalpel, no sutures, and no incision.

Only a select number of dentists, who have been through an intense training program at Dr. Chao’s training center in Alhambra, California are licensed by Dr. Chao to provide this service. Dr. Brother completed this training in March 2016 and has been pleased to offer this service to a number of patients, who have been very happy with the result of covering their exposed tooth roots.

A Smile Makeover in Half the Time

Achieving a beautiful smile is easier than you think.  Correcting the shape of a smile for many people can change their appearance and how we and other feel about us.  At Smile by Design we straighten teeth without traditional wire braces with a product called Invisalign.invisalign retainer

Invisalign is a series of clear plastic retainers that straighten teeth in about half the time of traditional wire braces. The transformation process is typically accomplished in 10 -12 months rather than the traditional 2 year time needed for braces.  Some people require less time and some, a little more.

A series of clear aligners are used to slowly transform the position of teeth.  Every two weeks a new dental aligner is provided to the patient to wear. Top and or bottom teeth may be corrected as needed.  The mouth piece(s) feels snug at first and then as the teeth move into their new position the clear mold and the teeth match.  The process is repeated and based on the amount of movement required to move the teeth to their new positions. Each patient is different and the process will vary.

For adults Invisalign may be the best solution and there are several reasons for this.

First: Most Invisalign  cases are done on fully grown adults not children whose teeth may not all be completely erupted and may be in the midst of growth and development when guiding proper jaw growth is an integral part of the orthodontic treatment.

Second: Most adult concerns tend to focus on the smile zone, typically the most forward 8-10 teeth in the upper and lower jaws. Back molars are more likely to be in a proper bite that may not require much if any alteration in position.

Third: Invisalign aligner treatment lends itself more to creating tooth movement on multiple teeth simultaneously more so than traditional braces.

Lastly, proper case selection by the treating doctor is key. Invisalign excels at widening dental arches to create room for crowded teeth and it also excels at moving teeth in the curve of the jaw to create a straight appearance. There are some cases, especially those that are the fault of jaw growth that may be more challenging to do with Invisalign aligners. Sometimes proper treatment may require surgical intervention to treat these individuals.
